The beautiful – but challenging – Shawangunk Ridge Trail Run will take place in Rosendale, New York on September 13.
The event is put on by RunWild and it offers 70-mile, 30-mile, and half marathon options. The race is known for its spectacular scenery, but it also features rugged mountain terrain – the 70-mile course typically has a 50 percent DNF rate.
The Shawangunk Ridge Trail is a 70-mile hiking trail traversing the entire length of the Shawangunk Mountains, from High Point State Park in New Jersey, to the town of Rosendale, New York. Along the way, the SRT passes through rolling hills, wetlands, rare dwarf pine barrens, sky lakes, waterfalls, and the distinctive white conglomerate cliffs of the Shawangunk Mountains.
From vantage points in these mountains, some 2,000 feet above the Hudson Valley, visitors enjoy views that cover five states and reach more than 100 miles. Because of its scenic beauty and rare ecosystems, the Nature Conservancy has identified this ridge as “one of Earth’s last great places.”
The race is a point-to-point traverse and features a “minimalist” unsupported format. Participants must bring their own food, water filter, navigation equipment, and more.
