Portland to Host Backyard Ultra in July

Portland, Maine will be the site of a backyard ultra during the height of summer this year.

The Back Cove Backyard Ultra presented by The Grind Run Company returns for its fourth year in 2025.

The event will begin on July 12 along Portland’s Back Cove Trail, one of the oldest and most popular trails in Portland.

The 3.6-mile loop trail offers beautiful views of the Portland skyline while running along a tidal estuary basin. It is a nontechnical, mostly flat gravel trail with a short paved bridge crossing. Each loop of the ultra will include a short add-on to get the course to equal the standard 4.16-mile backyard distance.

As is customary with backyard ultras, runners will head out on the loop every hour on the hour until only one runner is left.
